Keynote: “Blue Lab: Environmental Media in Practice”
This talk will argue for collaborative media creation as a bridge among the environmental humanities and sciences that pressure tests the meaningfulness of scholarship beyond academia. Carruth will share work-in-progress from Blue Lab, an environmental media studio at Princeton where scholars and creative practitioners incubate climate documentaries-among other art forms-that eschew disaster spectacle, interknit research with lived knowledge, and dwell with communities doing the slow work of shoring up or salvaging places they call home.
Allison Carruth is Professor of American studies and the High Meadows Environmental Institute at Princeton University. She directs the Program in Environmental Studies and leads Blue Lab, an environmental media and storytelling studio. She is the author of three books, most recently Novel Ecologies: Nature Remade and the Illusions of Tech (University of Chicago Press 2025).
With Q&A and Discussion Moderated by SOF Assistant Professor Hunter Vaughan, Director of the Emerson Environmental Media Initiative.
