Environmental Media Initiative
The Emerson Environmental Media Initiative (EEMI) aims to plant a green flag and position the College in the forefront of environmental media and sustainable film education. The EEMI is mandated to support the growth of cross-departmental and disciplinary offerings, and to help build capacity that feeds into curriculum development, sustainability training and certification, student filmmaking around environmental issues and climate justice, and research-sharing events.
Our mission is to spotlight Emerson’s potential as a Boston-area node and global trailblazer in the burgeoning intersection between media and the environment, according to three key pillars:

Environmental Media Scholarship and Practice
Environmental media studies is a burgeoning interdisciplinary field looking at the socioenvironmental costs and consequences of screen media, film and media production cultures, life-cycle media materiality, and the infrastructures and resource base of digital growth. The EEMI supports research development and sharing across the college and connects our scholars with a global academic network, supports student research interest in the area, and encourages students to integrate this epistemological background into their artistic practice.

Green Film Training and Sustainability Education
The EEMI is committed to enhancing Emerson College’s place as a leading school for media training by preparing students for more environmentally conscientious practice in a professional context increasingly focused on sustainability and environmental responsibility. From integrating environmental values into more film, television, and media classrooms, to providing workshops and incentives for sustainability skill-building, we aim to help our students become future leaders in greening the industry.

Environmental Justice in the Community
Environmental media studies is a field committed to providing actionable recommendations and driving real world change, and the EEMI strives to enhance Emerson’s community engagement by supporting student and faculty media projects on local environmental justice issues. Building relationships and partnerships with local institutions and citizens, we support collaborative media projects revealing the social inequalities of environmental issues, promoting community representation, and pushing for more equitable governmental policy development.
Environmental Media Collective
Come one, come all! Emerson students are invited to join the Environmental Media Collective, a student-led consortium for environmentalist media makers and storytellers looking for kindred spirits to team up for collaborative work on films and other content creation.
